Hello! My name is Jake Boldman and I'm here to talk about jazz, music, life, and lead trumpet.
"Well who the hell are you and why should I care?" - someone probably
Fair question! I'm not anyone special, just a trumpet player trying to share some knowledge that I wish I had when I was younger, and some from when I was older. I have studied jazz extensively, specifically lead trumpet and big band, and would like to pass along some information that could be helpful. If you want to know more about me just check out the homepage, my bio and resume are both available.
You don't have to be a lead trumpet player or even a trumpet player to get something out of this blog. Broad topics will be discussed that have a ton to do with playing lead but that also reach a wide instrumental audience. Anyone can benefit from a lesson on critical listening but you might not be as inclined to stick around for the upper register lesson. And that's cool! We're here to start a discussion. Take what works for you and leave the rest.
Here are some topics we will discuss in weeks to come:
the importance musicality
practice routines
upper register playing/practice
how to critically listen to music
transcription analysis of lead trumpet players
big band styles
lead trumpet profiles (think baseball cards but with lead players)
big band listening guides
This is just the beginning but I hope it's enough to entice you to come back and hang! I can't wait to start chatting with y'all so stay tuned.
-Jake
